IT departments have 2 choices

1. Get a clue.
2. Die.

That's it. There's not going to be a lot of middle ground.

I think it's natural for people to like control. For several decades IT had control over all technology consumed in the enterprise.

IT is losing this control and losing it fast. Too many IT departments are fighting reality. Consumerization is not some passing fad. We spend all day with our laptops, smartphones and tablets. We've developed a taste for what we like, we've developed preferences. Preferences are personal.

The days of "here's your Dell and Blackberry" because they're "enterprise grade" are dead and they are never, ever coming back. Too many IT teams think a magic Windows tablet/PC/phone all-things-to-everyone OS is going to correct "what's wrong" and put them back in control. It's fantasy.

Gartner and others think by 2017 the CMO will spend more on IT than the CIO. No question the modern IT team needs to adapt. Those that embrace reality will be rockstars in their organizations. Those that look for ways to "make things right" are going to get run over ... apparently by the marketing department.
