Apple "Tablet" - worth the hype!

Articles on the Apple Tablet range from the ecstatic anticipation to the "you don't need one" to the intelligent. I think it's fun to get excited about life - from babies to softball games, great food to a neat device. Personally I take pleasure in something that is well designed, like my Specialized Epic soft-tail.

Mr. Spock didn't have to find a kitchen table, sit down, or roll in his C.O.W. (computer on wheels) to interact with his device. I don't want to either.  The world is overdue for a quality tablet-like device.

Nurse, doctor, realtor, speech pathologist, personal trainer, physical therapist, interior decorator, show rooms (cars, furniture, appliances), occupational therapist, on-site project manager, architect, home inspector … anybody who’s on the move and doesn’t have a workspace. A tablet-like device is an improvement over the laptop for the same reasons the laptop is an improvement over the desktop. The tablet-like device allows a person to interact with their applications more naturally - the designs from desktop to laptop to tablet are progressing down a natural path. To use your desktop you had to go back to your desk and to use your laptop you have to sit down or set it on a counter. Laptops are awkward because they have to be set down to use - the tablet does not.

We’re not meant to be at a desk all day but up and moving around. I shouldn’t have to sit all day just to suit my computer. Need a more robust keyboard for particular tasks? Sit down at your desk and plug the device into a docking station that allows the use of a (wireless) keyboard and (wireless...) monitor.

Obviously building a quality tablet-like device is very challenging - both from a software and hardware perspective. Apple can and will hit a home run with their "tablet".

Android and ChromeOS will be big players in the space as well.

I don’t see a lot of laptops on StarTrek – that’s good enough to convince me they're viable :-)
